During the course of this workshop you will make your very own tote bag from scratch using a normal domestic sewing machine. You will have a choice of brown, black, navy blue, dark green, light grey or purple leather and hardware can be silver, antique brass or gold.
Working with leather is very different to fabric and during this one day workshop you will learn an extensive range of techniques, tips and tricks. As well as learning how to construct a tote bag with base and patch pocket, skills transferable to fabric, you will spend the day learning all about leather. From cutting, preparing and stitching leather to fusing, bonding and using hardware such as rivets. You will also learn how to use lacquer paint, a lovely finishing technique.
All leather, tools, bag making suppplies and hardware are provided. However to make your bag your own you are required to bring along a piece of fabric for the lining. This should be a medium to heavy weight cotton or canvas would be ideal, something with a bit of stability which will help the bag retain its structure but not anything too thick. You will need two pieces at least L 45cm x H 50cm.
Finished handbag size is L 34cm x H 38cm x W 7cm with a handle drop 20cm
This workshop is suitable for anyone who would like to learn to sew with leather but you must be able to already use a sewing machine.
If you are bringing your own machine please note that we will be using teflon feet. We will have a supply of universal snap on feet but please check if you machine needs a specific type of foot. One of our machines can be used if there are any issues.
This workshop is being led by Rebecca.
